My First Collab Post with Jen Rose from Living Outside the Lines

Bonjour mes lecteurs!Β (Sorry, I literally had no clue how to start off this post. So, when I saw that gif, I was like why not speak French?! XD)🀣 Annywaay, as you can see from the title this is my FIRST EVER collab post!!!!!!!!!!!! YIPEE!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!! I’m SuPeR excited for it!!!!!πŸ˜€ But before I get into that, I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OF YOU LOVELY PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWED TWN!!!!!!!!!!!!πŸ˜€ We have now reached over 100 followers (not counting me and Issabelle who of course follow our own blog XD)!!!!!

^^ That’s us trying to keep calm while internally screaming THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

As a celebration to TWN reaching 100 subscribers, we hope to have a surprise for you all! But seeing as how I did NOT see this coming (honestly I never expected we would reach 100 subscribers), we still have to get the surprise together. So at the moment I’m not sure how long it will take, but there will be a surprise post for you all!

Now, next off – today’s collab post. I am doing my collab with my AMAZING friend, Jen at Living Outside the Lines. Jen and I have been friends for awhile now and she is one of the sweetest people I know!!! You’ll love her blog and getting to know her! Oh, and Jen, THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this collab with me!!!!<33333333

For this post, I asked Jen some questions for her to answer. I hope you enjoy and make sure to head over to Jen’s blog to read my answers to her questions.

Disney questions:
  1. Do you have a Disney OTP?

Hmm… Growing up I would instantly spout off Ariel and Eric, but now that’s tied with Rapunzel and Eugene. *grins* Ariel could pretty much sum up my childhood, I was either watching the movie, singing the songs, or pretending toΒ beΒ a mermaid, or all three at once. πŸ˜‰ And so, of course, Ariel and Eric are my One True Pairing… but like I said, Rapunzel and Eugene stole my heart when I first saw the movie. *happy sigh* They are just so adorable together!

  2. Which Disney prince would you go out with?

Haha, I don’t actually “date” and all the Disney princes have girlfriends already, ;p so I’ll say Eugene. He’d be a fun guy to have around, teach me how to pick a lock,Β pickpocket,Β always good for a sarcastic remark, yeah, great times. XD

  3. What are your top three favorite Disney live-action remakes?

Oh, goodness, I honestly love them all, so picking a top three is hard. Well, I adore Maleficent (if you couldn’t tell by how it’s influenced my Sleeping Beauty retelling ;p), Beauty and the Beast (I could listen to Evermore all. day.), and Aladdin (Speechless is amazing!). This list kind of changes on a daily basis so don’t hold me to it. πŸ˜‰
Fairy Tale questions:
  1. What role wouldΒ play in a fairy tale (heroine, villain, etc.)?

Hmm… What role would IΒ wantΒ to play? Or what role would I most likely play should I find myself in a fairy tale? I would want to play the fairy godmother type character who is sweet and kind, but not above being mischievous at times. Now, who would I most likely be? The damsel in distress… yeah… and not even the kind that could handle it, “so have a nice day, Herc.” XD Oh wait, I’d be like Charlotte from The Princess and the Frog. XD “Did you say prince?”

  2. What is your favorite fairy tale retelling that you’ve read?

Oh this question seems a little cruel! XD I want to say all of Kirsten Fichter’sΒ Once Upon a Twist Tales, and Shannon Hale’sΒ The Goose Girl, but there’s alsoΒ All the Queen’s SonsΒ by Elizabeth Kipps …so hard to pick, and I just realized how very few retellings I’ve actually read. (Mental note: remedy this immediately!) Okay, so, favorite retelling I’ve read would be Gail Carson Levine’sΒ Ella Enchanted. *grins* Okay, yes, I could have just said that to begin with, but I wanted to mention the other retellings too. XPΒ Ella EnchantedΒ is a big part of my childhood, I read that book over and over until I practically had it memorized. And that ending still gives my heart a happy thrill. <3

  3. Do you know of any little known fairy tales?

Hmm, I think I know of a few from reading a few of Andrew Lang’s Color Fairytale books, and the first one that popped in my head was The Yellow Dwarf from the Blue Fairy Book. It’s quite weird, as per the norm for fairy tales, but also very sad, again as per the norm.
Writing questions:
  1. Do you prefer to write guy or girl main characters?

I don’t have a problem writing guy MCs (like Sorren from my SB retelling), but I generally find myself writing girl MCs. So, while my girl MCs outnumber my poor guys, I don’t actually prefer one to the other. It just depends on the story I’m telling.

  2. What genre do youΒ prefer to write in?

Speculative Fiction! But mainly Fantasy. I love writing in made up worlds, and whenever I try to write outside of the umbrella category of Spec-Fic, it generally turns intoΒ someΒ sort of Fantasy. My last Historical Fiction didn’t last long before it turned Fantasy. XD

  3. What do you love most about writing?

I love meeting my characters (who honestly pretty much show up fully formed, but with lots of secrets, lol.) I think it’s my characters that I love the most about writing. I love learning about them, learning their backstory, who they are, and watching them grow on their journey, or mourning them as they go down the wrong path and suffer the consequences. My characters are like my kids, my inky little kids who are very taciturn and love doing things their own way even though I’m just trying to get them to a happy ending… er, mostly. I also love telling stories, of seeing good overcome evil, showing that no matter how dark things get there is still hope, there is always hope.

I hope y’all enjoyed reading Jen’s answers!!!!!! They were all FABULOUS!!! Don’t forget you can chat with Jen and me in the comments below. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Awesome post, Kat! Congrats on over 100 subscribers – I can’t wait to see what you guys cook up for the surprise post!

Admittedly, I have never read any fairytale retellings. In fact, I had never read any fantasy in my life until I got the Chronicles of Narnia for Christmas. C.S. Lewis is a fantasy genius. And although I’m not familiar with much fantasy besides his, hearing all my friends like you and Issa talk about their fantasy WIPs has gotten me interested in the genre. It’s so creative and definitely takes a certain talent to write! I don’t think I could do it; I can craft a fantasy world for a short story or poem, but for an entire novel I’m pretty lost. XD

I don’t prefer girl MCs over guy MCs or vice versa, either. Years ago, when I was really young in my writing journey, all I wrote were girl MCs. Probably because I read so much American Girl, LOL. I never got any ideas for stories with guy MCs. Now, though, I feel that nearly all of my story ideas feature guy MCs. *pauses* But Temira is a girl…. πŸ˜‚ I guess it really does just depend on the story you’re telling!

    • Katherine

Thank you so much, JC!!!!!!!!πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ Hehe, I can’t wait either for that surprise post either!!!!!!!! Yay, I’m happy to hear that you’ve gotten interested in fantasy!!!!!! It is definitely an exciting genre!!πŸ˜‰

    • Jen

I’m so glad you liked the collab, Joy! <3

C.S. Lewis is definitely a fantasy genius! I grew up practically living and breathing fantasy worlds, aka Disney Baby here XD, so writing it is pretty much second nature. A Fantasy genre you might like is Kingdom Adventure, it's basically fantasy with no magic or magical/mythical creatures. Like if you put an historical fiction story in a completely made up world and maybe tweaked a bit of the technology. But that's so cool you write short stories and poetry! I've dabbled in poetry, but all my short stories end up seedlings of a novel. XD

Oh, same! I almost never wrote from a guy's POV until a few years ago. And I love American Girls! Felicity was one of my favourites! <3 I've just always loved the Revolutionary time period. Samantha was another favourite, and Josefina. Lol, it really does depend on the story! XD Temira is a lovely name! Is she from your series about the Apostle Paul?

      • Joy Caroline

Aw, Jen, I absolutely enjoyed it! I am so sorry I didn’t reply for the longest time. Things have been crazy busy and I’ve been falling a bit behind on my notifications!

Ooh, I love Felicity! I have the Felicity doll and she is so pretty.

Thanks! Temira is indeed from the Apostle Paul novels. She is Paul’s younger sister.

        • Jen

Oh that’s okay! We all get busy sometimes, it’s been rather busy for me too, lol.

That is so neat you have a Felicity doll!

Right, now I remember! I hope writing is going well for you! πŸ˜€

CONGRATS ON GETTING 100 FOLLOWERS! (Wow that is a big number!) That means there are 104 people who love your blog and more who don’t know it yet but will find themselves here! Can’t wait for the surprise post!
Same here! I feel like I tend to write more girl MCs because that is my go-to, but lately, I’ve been writing a WIP with a boy MC! (Let’s just say that it’s a bit harder since I’m used to the other way around lol.)
Again, I had so much fun reading this collab!

    • Jen

Hi, Alexa! I’m so glad you enjoyed the interviews! And yeah, I feel you on guy MC’s being hard sometimes when you’re used to girl MC’s. That’s so cool you’re writing one, though! ^_^

  • Christine Smith

First of all, congrats on hitting 100 followers!!! Such a milestone! πŸ˜€

Secondly, I LOVED THESE INTERVIEWS!!! I mean Disney? Fairy tales??? WRITING?! ALL MY FAVORITE THINGS. I agree with so many of your answers, Jen! Rapunzel and Eugene are 100% my top Disney couple EVER. And being a fairy godmother in a fairy tale is the DREAM. Buuut I’d probably be the damsel in distress as well. Eheheh. I also tend to write more female MCs even though I like writing males equally??? I don’t know how the girls always take over. XD And YES to writing about characters and hope and just YES YES YES. Loved all your thoughts on the last question!

This was SUCH fun! Thank you both so much for sharing! <3

    • Jen

Eeeee! Yay! I’m thrilled you loved them!!! <3 Rapunzel and Eugene are so perfect! 1000000% Ugh, yes, exact same. I want to be the fairy godmother, but… yeah, probably not looking at reality there. XD I know! I enjoy writing both, and yet nine times out of ten I'm writing a girl MC yet again! XD Awww, thank you! That really does sum up the whole reason I write, too. Also because my characters live rent free in my head and I need to write their stories down before it gets too cluttered up there. XD

Thank you so much for reading! <3

    • Katherine

      THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!πŸ˜€

Yay, I’m so happy you love them!!!!! Hehe, Disney, fairy tales, and writing are my FAVORITE things too!!!!!πŸ˜€ Aw, thank you so much for reading and commenting!!!!! <3

  • Ally M.J.

Aw, yay!!! I’m so happy you enjoyed reading this!!!! Ah, YES, me too!!!!!!πŸ˜‰ Disney and fairy tales are just DA BEST!!!!! Ooh, I’m curious, what’s your favorite fairy tale?

  • Jane

I loved reading through your question, Katherine!!!!!!!!! And Jen, your answers were AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved how you said that the characters are your favorite part of writing!! It’s so true what you said about it!!! <3333
Also, CONGRATULATIONS on reaching 100 followers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited for you guys!!!!!!!!!! And I will be eagerly awaiting the surprise post!!! The suspense is already killing me!!!! XD

    • Katherine

Thank you so much, Jane!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, Jen’s answers were FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!

I’m so excited for the surprise!!!😁 We’ve already got an awesome idea for it and Imma crossing my fingers that it will work out great!!! Hehe . . . *rubs hands together mischievously* you’ll be in suspense for a long while ’cause the surprise needs a LOT of planning and working out on all the details.πŸ˜‰ (Ok, I’ve said too much! *zips up lips* XD)

  • Ribbon Ash

Great questions, Katherine! And awesome answers from Jen. It was so fun to read about her Disney opinions and her fairytale tastes (I need to read all of those fairytale retellings she mentioned. I believe I have all of them on my TBR, and I actually own the whole Once Upon a Twist Tales series, but I haven’t read them yet, except for one. I really need to though! Especially Ella Enchanted as I love the movie forever!)
Also that question about if she prefer male or female MCs… that reminded me how recently I was thinking on how I am more drawn to male MCs than female MCs and I have no idea why. XD And it was so funny to hear that she can’t non-fantasy stories. Fantasy is superior anyway. XD πŸ˜›
What she loves most about writing is very similar, if not exactly the same, as to what I love most about writing! <3 <3 <3

    • Katherine

Thank you so much, Ribbon Ash!!!!!! πŸ˜€ Yes, she had fantastic answers!!!!! I agree!!!πŸ˜‰ (Ah, yes, me too!!!!πŸ˜€ That’s so cool that you own the Once Upon a Twist Tales series!!!!!! I’ve been wanting to read those books!!! Which one have you read? *gasp* I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ella Enchanted movie too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!πŸ˜ƒ *high-fives* The book was great as well, so you should definitely read it!!)
Girl, I am the SAME way!!! I tend to want to write male MCs more so than female MCs. Yeah, I have no idea why I’m that way either, but at least I’m not the only one. *wink wink* XD Yep, I totally agree–fantasy is definitely superior!😜
COOL!!!! That’s the same for me too!!!!!! πŸ˜€ *high-fives* (Wow, we’ve got a lot in common!!) <333

(P.S. I am sooo sorry for the late reply!! I've had a lot going on the past couple of weeks. I hope things are going well for you though!!<3333)
