A Lesson On Love Guest Post by Blogger Victoria!

Hello bloggers, readers, and writers who are wanting that not-so-genius reason to procrastinate (I know you’re out there πŸ˜‰ ), welcome to the latest post on Teen Writers’ Nook!!!! Today as the title suggests TWN has the privilege of welcoming the AMAZING, the INCREDIBLE, the THIS-GIRL-IS-SO-AWESOME-I-HAVE-NO-IDEA-WHY-SHE-LIKES-BEING-BEST-FRIENDS-WITH-ME VICTORIAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!! *applause fills the blogosphere* I’m sure many of you have seen her around the TWN fam or maybe on your own site. BUT I bet y’all didn’t know that she just got HER OWN SITE!!!!!

*gasp*

Ikr!! Y’all should check it out and give her a wonderful follow right o’erΒ here! Now I just wanna give a brief intro before I let her take the spotlight. πŸ˜‰ So Victoria was one of the first TWN followers and I knew from the moment she commented on a post that she was AWESOME and we were gonna be suuuper great friends and I would end up annoying her with me *slight* insanity. (Though good news that hasn’t happened YET!!!!!) Victoria is just one of the most sweetest gals you will ever meet in your life!! She’s fun, my Star Wars fangirl buddy, and a girl who has a wonderful heart for Christ!!! As I’m sure y’all can tell after reading this post. Well, without further ado, let’s just jump right in!

Hey, hey everybody!!! As Issabelle said before, Victoria is my name and guest blog posting is my game! Or at least it’s my new game….*cough* starting today. And because of that I wanna give a HUGE THANK YOU to Issabelle for hosting me!!!!! You’re the absolute best, girl!!!Β

But now, ONTO THE POST!!! (Which I guess has already started, but still.) XD Today,Β  I’ll be giving you all the (hopefully) awesome pleasure of reading about

Wait for it

HOW GRASS GROWS!!!!!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€Β

Β

Hehehehehehe (you SO knew I had to do that Issabelle). ;P And yes, peeps, I’m kidding. Kind of…

You’re probably thinking Uh, if this crazy person is seriously gonna talk about how grass grows the whole time then I’m outta here. But don’t worry, I’m not that mean (or am I???). πŸ˜‰Β

What I’m really gonna talk about is love (as in what John from the Bible calls β€˜brotherly love’). Because in the world we live in today, loving others is one of the most important reminders everyone could have and, just like it takes time for grass to grow, loving others, especially your enemies, can also take time. The amount of time, however, often varies depending on the people in your life. So let’s take a look at a few different types of love that exist! (Which some of you may already know about).Β

First, there’s storge (a.k.a. affection). This is the kind of love people typically feel towards their families. It’s pretty instinctive and, even though your family might drive each other crazy, you still hopefully love them at the end of the day. XD Thus, this one doesn’t really take a whole lot of time to master.Β

Second, there’s phileo (a.k.a. friendship). This is the love you typically feel towards your BFF(s), other friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. With this love, you know that, no matter what happens, they’ll stick by ya like glue! For example, I have a phileo love for Issabelle because she’s totally awesome and one of the most supportive friends I have! πŸ˜‰ This love definitely can take longer to achieve, seeing how you actually have to meet and get to know one another. But in the end, it will mostly likely be well worth it!Β

Third, there’s eros (a.k.a. the romantic love). This one….well I think everyone knows what this one’s all about! XD Romantic love usually takes time too (in fact, it probably should take time) so, sorry Disney, but your whole β€˜love at first sight’ thingamajig isn’t super realistic (in most cases, at least).Β

Fourth, there’s agape (a.k.a. the unconditional, everlasting love from God). This one’s my favorite because this is the most genuine love that exists. While the loves 1-3 can change or even fade, God’s love won’t. He loves everyone, even those who don’t know Him and aren’t Believers.Β

So, as you can see, with all of these different loves we exert (the first three, that is) each of them take different amounts of time and love overall is something we grow in everyday. πŸ˜‰Β

But what about your enemies? Where would they fall in this list? Well, my good friend, if you’re starting to fall asleep now, then wake up and grab a caffeinated beverage or a slab of chocolate, β€˜cause this is the main point I wanna make to you!Β

As I said before, the world we live in is one that needs the reminder of love the most, especially when it comes to loving your enemies. For me, when I hear that, I automatically think that I need to be tortured by some terrorist to love my enemy. That can be the case for some people, like missionaries in hostile countries, but it could be your sibling who you’ve been bickering with all day, too. Or it could even be a friend you’ve gotten into a fight with. It could be a school bully, the grumpy neighbor next door, the co-worker who seems to take great delight in vexing you, people you don’t agree with religion-wise, politics-wise, morally-wise, or, yes, any form of terrorist.

But, you might think, why should we like, much less love, people who don’t love us back?

Weeeelll, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but people are gonna hate you. People are gonna hate me. People are gonna hate all of us, especially if we’re Christians and they don’t share our same belief. In fact, John says in 1 John 3:13 (ESV), β€œDo not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.” See? Even an apostle who lived a few thousand years ago experienced the same thing.Β

So why, you asked, should we love them back? The answer can be found a verse later in 1 John 3:14. β€œWe [Christians] know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.”

Now, that’s not saying if you don’t love, for example, cheesecake, then you’re gonna automatically die or something. (If that was true, then we’d be in a lotta trouble) πŸ˜‰Β

What it really means is, as Christians, we obviously believe that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and therefore have left the path of going to Hell (or as it says in the verse, β€˜death’) and are now on the path to eternal life in Heaven. Not only that, but because we are Christians, we also love our brothers (fellow believers in Christ) and truly know what real love is. Remember the fourth love, agape? Like I mentioned earlier, that’s the most genuine love that exists because it’s God’s love for us. And since we’re followers of Him we know what that love feels like.

But listen up, y’all. People who aren’t Christians, people who don’t know God and have turned their backs on Him, don’t know that love. They have never felt the greatest love in existence. Therefore, they themselves don’t know how to truly and genuinely love others. As it says in 1 John 3:14, β€œWhoever does not love, abides in death.”

That means they’re lost.

That means they’re far from God.

That means they’re going to Hell.

Which is why we need to love our enemies especially if they aren’t Christians. Because maybe, if we love them, we can show them a glimpse of the love God has for us. And just maybe, if we can give them a taste of that agape love, then their hearts will be softened (by God, of course) and get saved.

But they don’t deserve it, one might say. Yeah, well, neither do we. We don’t deserve it anymore than, like, the worst criminal in the world. But God still gave us grace and a chance to be saved through Jesus Christ so we could live in eternal glory with Him. What’s more, we were His enemies at one time, too. So if God can love His enemies, we can love ours.

Sure, it can be hard. It will be hard in many cases. I definitely don’t want to love my enemies most of the time, but Jesus says in Matthew 5:44, β€œLove your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. So, if you think about it, hating people shouldn’t be an option since Jesus commands us to love them instead. And, yes, even though that seems like an impossible β€œrule” to follow, it doesn’t have to be. God will give us the strength to do so as long as we ask for it. Luke 1:37 states, β€œFor nothing will be impossible with God” and that goes for loving our enemies too, even if it takes a while to do so. Remember, like grass, loving others is a process that takes time for us to grow in everyday and that’s okay. We’re not perfect. We’re HUMAN. We need time to do things especially if it’s hard. Think about it, if more people did the hard thing of loving their enemies, imagine how the world would be today. I bet it’d be a lot more peaceful than it is now!Β

Β Therefore, I challenge you to do an act of love for somebody TODAY. It doesn’t have to be one of your enemies (I mean, if it is, then extra cookies and ice cream for you!), but I want you to show love to at least one person (as in a human, not a pet) at some point in the next 24 hours. This could include telling someone how much they mean to you (via face-to-face, texting, email, call, etc.), writing someone a nice note, doing a chore or task for someone, or even, I dunno, baking a cake for them! XD It could be whatever you want, as long as it’s loving.Β

SOOO, that’s it! Y’all are probably so glad I’m finally done….XD Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH, Issabelle, for letting me do this!!! I hope you guys enjoyed this and that you got at least a little take away about loving others! Tally-ho!!! πŸ˜€Β

Ah, what a great post, Victoria! I loved it! And side note – I absolutely love the ESV translation. It’s the one I cite most often when citing Scripture on my site.

I love how you listed the different types of love. If you don’t mind, I’ll add that it’s absolutely possible to love one person in more than one way. Such as with a spouse, you could love with eros but also with phileo. Or with a good friend, you could love with both phileo and storge. I think there’s a lot of significance in the fact that St. Paul and St. Peter (as well as others) addressed the church as “brothers and sisters.” It shows that the church should have familial love for one another, like Paul’s fatherly love for Timothy although they were not biologically related.

Awesome points about loving your enemies. It’s pretty tough to do! I always go back to two of my all-time favorite passages in the Bible – Luke 23:34 and Romans 9:1-3. Those are such powerful verses about love for enemies.

Again, this was incredible! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!

    • Victoria

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Joy!!! Yes, me too!! I guess it’s just the easiest translation for me to understand most of the time! XD

Ooooh, THAT’S A GREAT ADDITION!!!! Not sure why I didn’t even think of it. XD Oh, yes! The point you made about the apostles calling the church “brothers and sisters” is definitely significant (like with, as you said, Paul and Timothy) and how they loved each other with phileo, storge, etc.!

I know right?!?! It really is a challenge, but I LOVE both of those verses you mentioned!!! Those just show how much Jesus loved his enemies (as did Paul) and how we can try to be more like them!

Awww, well, I dunno about “wisdom”. XD I just like to share whatever God shows me! But you’re so welcome!!! And, again, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! Your whole comment means a lot to me, girl! πŸ˜€

  • Trixie M.

I loved this post!! Personally, I feel as I’m pretty good at liking my enemies, but it’s making them feel like I love them by the actions I do that I have a hard time with. This post will definitely inspire me to try harder. Thanks πŸ™‚

    • Victoria

Thank you, Trixie!!!! Ah, yes, I totally get that! It can be super hard to convince people with your actions that you really do love them (especially if they don’t believe you). But I’m so glad this post has inspired you to try harder! (Writing it out has definitely inspired me too)! XD Aww, you’re so welcome! πŸ˜€

  • GiGi

Well, Victoria, am not sure if I’m supposed to write on here, sooo, I’ll just say I not only really enjoyed your thoughts, but also actually Learned! Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll gain much from it as others will gain from you!

    • Victoria

Lol, don’t worry, you can write here!! (It’s kinda like the commenting system on social media!) Awwww, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Your encouragement means a lot to me! Love you!! πŸ˜€

  • Jane

That was such a great post and an amazing reminder, Victoria!!!!! It was actually just what I need for what I’m going through right now. Thank you so so soooooooo much!!!!!!!!
You have such a way with words and I loved how you compared loving ones enemies to growing grass. That was ingenious and so true!! We have these wonderful ladies who live next to us and me and my mom just got back from visiting with them and we were just talking about love and how to love your enemies. Funny how the Lord works things in like that. πŸ˜‰
Anyway, I LOVED THE POST!!!!!!! And CONGRATULATIONS for starting a blog!!!!!!!! I’m so excited for you and will definitely start stopping by there!!!!!! (I will warn you though, so far, I’ve not been the most consistent blog follower, so if I don’t comment on your post it doesn’t mean I didn’t like it or didn’t read it, it just means I was busy at the time or wasn’t sure what to say. [in a good way] πŸ™‚

    • Victoria

JANE!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! Awwwww, girl, you have NO idea how much that means to me to hear that!!! You’re ABSOLUTELY more than welcome! I’m sooo glad it helped! πŸ˜€
*Gasps* OH MY GOODNESS, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That’s like the BEST thing a blossoming writer (like me) can ever be told! 😊 Hehehe, I’m so glad you liked that! (I though it was pretty genius myself *coughs conspicuously*) XP Ohhhhhh, that’s so awesome! I love it how the Lord works in ways like that! πŸ˜€
D’AWWWW, THANK YOU!!!! Lol, don’t worry! I’m not always as consistent as I want sometimes too! πŸ˜‰ Thank you sooo much for stopping by, though! That means SO much to me, girl!!! πŸ˜€ (And wow, I just realized I used exclamations at the end of EVERY sentence. *wonders if I should go see a punctuation doctor…*) πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  • Alexa

I loved this post Victoria! It was such a good reminder to love my enemies! (Because that’s something that I struggle with) I loved the “grass trick” at the beginning and the analogy too! It is so true that loving others takes time. I will DEFINITELY do your challenge today! (I have a specific person in mind already!) Again, this was SO inspiring! <33

    • Victoria

Awwww, THANK YOU ALEXA!!!!! YES! I struggle with the same thing a lot, but I think learning this and sharing it with other people has really helped me and I’m SOOO glad it has helped you and others too!!!
