6 Awesome Tips to Help You Accomplish a Mind-Blowing Plot Twist

First things first, keep an eye out of the next chapter in Robyn Hood!! It should go live either this evening or tomorrow! Second things second, I haven’t given stats in my writing in a while so we’ll do that first!!!!

Song that has really been inspiring me“Words” by Hawk Nelson (Lyrics I especially like: “I don’t want to say a word unless it points the world back to You” // “God Your voice is the only thing we need to hear” // “I want to speak Your love not just another noise” // )

Another song (’cause you know I can’t pick just one)“Revolutionary” by Josh Wilson (Lyrics I especially like: “Maybe you’re not like me, maybe we don’t agree, maybe that doesn’t mean we’ve gotta be enemies” // “Why does kindness seem revolutionary?” // “When did we let hate get so ordinary?” // “I’m turning the TV down, drowning their voices out” // “What would Jesus do? He would love first” // )

I HIGHLY recommend checking both of these songs out!!!!!!! Now let’s get into today’s post!!! <33

Aah, the good ole plot twist! They can make a book exciting and keep readers on the edge of their seats, but only when done right! Yes, there are many times when I’ve read a book and the whole “plot twist” just falls short. Readers come with expectations. They want to be shocked but also see it coming. They want it to make sense. So how do we write plot twists that readers will love? That’s what we’re uncovering here at Teen Writers’ Nook with six awesome tips to accomplish your next plot twist!! At the end, hopefully, these plot twists won’t seem so scary to write! Huge shout out to my AH-MAY-ZHING friend, Joy Caroline, for requesting this post!

1. Foreshadowing is still AWESOME!

I’m sure you’ve heard it MANY times before to foreshadow. Well, it’s especially important to foreshadow your plot twists!! Why? I’ve heard it before in reviews when the plot twist is revealed and the readers feel like the author just made that up on the spot! Though we want to be thrown off from the surprise, when we look back we want to see in the story signs that point to it! So foreshadow, leave little hints that maybe this servant girl is really the long lost princess of a stolen kingdom. Or this knight is hiding a powerful weapon of magic and destruction. Or the villain is the hero’s father!!! (I really LOVE that trope. 🙂 But don’t make it obvious! One of the best books I’ve read that was able to nail foreshadowing and completely throw me off when the whole plot twist was revealed is All Fall Down by Ally Carter. In the book Grace, the MC, is constantly having flashbacks to a particular memory. At first we get small portions of it and then it starts gradually getting bigger. As the reader, I thought the flashbacks weren’t that important until the plot twist was revealed. Those flashbacks were indirectly referencing something that was going to be revealed at the end and I didn’t even know it!

Though we want to be thrown off from the surprise, when we look back we want to see in the story signs that point to it!

2. Give readers a reason to second guess themselves!

Another great book with some epic foreshadowing is, you guessed it, The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen. When I was reading this book I had created a theory about some secret I thought was gonna be revealed. But throughout the book I kept second guessing myself. There were a million reasons why this wasn’t the way I thought. (By the way, it didn’t turn out like I had thought all along. XD) I’d formulate my theory and be given a reason why I shouldn’t think that, break it down, be given a hint why it could be that, build it again and so on until we actually got the plot twist.

3 Don’t always go with the first thing that comes to mind!
Now, sometimes the first thing that comes to mind is really epic and genius and you should just go for it, so note ALWAYS! But sometimes if this plot twist was the first thing that came to mind, most likely it’ll be the first thing that comes to the reader’s mind. My favorite author ever, Jennifer A. Nielsen said in a webinar I listened in on once, “Limitation explodes creativity.” What this means, is the more you limit yourself on your ideas the more work your mind has to do and the more creative your choice is!
4 Your plot twist needs to make sense!
So this one’s pretty self-explanatory. Basically if the MC is a descendant of Country A and his parents and his parents’ parents and so forth have always lived in that country don’t make him suddenly the long-lost prince of Country B. (Unless…of course, you know he was adopted or stolen, which if that’s gonna be the case make sure it’s explained. Like why was he sent away or adopted or stolen. You don’t just send your kid away without a good logical reason!)
5. Let your characters react to it!

Okay, so I was reading Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter (yes, I’m using another Ally Carter book, but her stories are FULL of plot twists) and there was this whole shocking secret that was revealed near the end! I was shocked. It completely threw me off but at the same time I shoulda seen it coming from the incredible foreshadowing…but it still wasn’t the most amazing thing ever. Why? Because while I was sitting over here in surprise Cammie, the MC, was just like oh, okay. And I was like GIRL YOU’RE JUST FOUND OUT THIS TOTALLY SURPRISING THING AND YOU’RE ACTING LIKE ALL WAS AMAZINGLY WELL??????? No, guys, we need to see how the character takes this new news. Like in Star Wars *SPOILER* we find out Luke’s dad is Darth Vadar.

What does Luke do? He doesn’t like the news! It surprises him and we see how upset he is. And a few scenes later he’s still dwelling on it. The surprise had an impact on him! Also bonus point: don’t always go with oh, I knew it all along! That’s probably my biggest pet peeve in stories when the MC finds out so and so was really this and that and they’re like I knew it all along!! If the MC had “known it all along” then why was this even a plot twist?! (Though, note: SOMETIMES this can work!)

6 Choose how you want it to be revealed.
Explore the different ways the plot twist can be revealed! Each one can have a stronger impact depending on your story! You can have it where the character figures it out for themselves (like in All Fall Down), where someone tells it to the character (like Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty) or even where the character tells it to the reader!!! I feel like sharing the example I’m thinking of would spoil this one book so we’re just gonna leave it at that. You could also do it where the readers find out before the MC or the MC never knows (like in Smells Like Pirates by Suzanne Selfors). And sometimes the plot twists aren’t even centered around the character so it’ll call for different measures. Like it’s about a side character so maybe the side character tells it to the MC (like Flunked by Jen Calonita) or vice versa. Or they both find out at the same time!! This will be a crucial part in your writing, so it’s best to figure it out!! The big plot twists revealed is not a scene that should be handled lightly!!

Well, I hope you enjoyed today’s post!! Some real quick things. First off, I’ve sent all the winners for TWN’s virtual scavenger hunt their prizes. Hey Mags! Haven’t commented on here in a while…. *laughs sheepishly*
But anyways, *changes subject hurriedly* I’m actually praying that your book will be published so you can have 50% instead on 9%, ok? Either way, don’t give up!
And… Great post and tips! I haven’t written fiction (Um, Grace you’ve only written like two chapters of anything. So what!?! You really didn’t have to bring that up.) so I’m not sure how plot twists fit in, but of course there are some pretty amazing real life plot twists so I’m definitely going to be coming back to this post. (I feel like that was wayy rambled and should not makes sense…)
Anyways, great post and keep up the great work!
Oh and congrats on 50!! *throws a mini party with chocolate* (No I didn’t steal that from Isabelle, not at all)

    • Issabelle

GRACE IS BACK TO TWN!!!!!!! I thought she had disappeared off the face of the blogosphere. XD Nah, I’m just joking!!! 😉 But it’s good to have you back!!! *hugs*
*wondering why we are so quickly changing the subject since I haven’t had the time to properly question what Grace was doing that was more important than hanging out with me* XD 🤣 I think that sentence was too long to be in asterisks. XD Aww, girl, that means a LOT!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! Alright, now I have more like a 49% of hope. 😉 Aww, girl, alright, I won’t give up!!!!!! (I don’t think you or anyone else on TWN is gonna let me give up. XD)
THANKS A LOT!!!!! This is like the one post I actually feel kind of qualified to write. 😉 Plot twists have always been a MAJOR part in all my stories! LOL!! That’s okay!! (What? Girl, you’re gonna have to AT LEAST write three chapters. XD I don’t know why or how that makes much of a difference only that it does. XD) Hmm…yeah, I don’t know how a plot twist would work in nonfiction, but I’m sure if anyone can figure it out that’d be you!!!! YAY!!! I’m soo happy to hear!!!!!! *dances* (Don’t worry it made sense. I also feel like I’m rambling more than usual in this comment. Today must be National Ramble to Your Virtual Friends Day. We should really have that day. XD I’d make very much use of it. XD)
      THANK YOU!!!!
Aww, THANKS AGAIN!!!! *grabs all the chocolate* (LOL!! We’re also gonna act like Issabelle did not steal that from other people. XD)

      • Grace

I was kinda disappeared from the blogosphere! I was gone for a few days, but uh, I just really haven’t had a ton of time with my new screen time rules…But that shouldn’t be an excuse for not hanging out with Maggie. She IS the best, after all.
That is such a great idea!! Maggie you are a genius! National Ramble to your Virtual Friends day! The name is even rambley. (tis a word, my dear)
Ok, I’ll write three. I’m actually more excited about this WIP (which is actually so barely in progress, that name doesn’t sound right…) than any other ones. I just have to do a lot of research and then find time to sit down and write soooooo, I should be more proactive about that…
        Anyways, have a fabulous day!
        Grace (or Me#1

        • Issabelle

Haha, yeah, I had noticed. That’s okay, though, we all need hiatuses every now and then. IKR!!!! These new screen time rules actually was giving me a lot more free time!!!! I didn’t realize how much time I’d been spending on my computer!! Haha, yeah, you’re TOTALLY Right!!!!! There’s no good excuse not to hang out with Maggie. I am the best. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 But seriously, Grace, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!!! 🙂
YAY!!!!! Yes, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!! It’s about time we all realized there’s a couple of genius ideas hiding behind my li’l ole wacky noggin. (Wait, who even says that???? XD) National Ramble to Your Virtual Friends Day will be the most EPIC DAY EVER!!!!!!! We should pick a date for that. XD *gasp* YOU’RE RIGHT!!!!! THE NAME IS RAMBLEY!!!!! (LOL!!! I wouldn’t have questioned it! 😉 )
WHOOOO YAAAAAAY!!!!!!!! *gets really excited* (Haha, that’s okay!!! It’s still a WIP in my opinion. XD) Oooooh, that’s soooo COOL!!!!!! WHOOOOO YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!! LOL!!! I feel ya there, sister. Finding time to write is actually SOOOO HARD!!! 😉
Yes, you have a fantabulous day too!!!
          Mags (Or Me #2…)

  • Ally M.J.

*claps hands excitedly* THIS IS THE EXACT POST I’VE BEEN NEEDING! BRM, (my WIP) is getting too ‘Twilight-esqe’ for my likes. It’s pretty much the same thing, only with angelish beings instead of vampires. (I haven’t actually seen any of the Twilight movies, but whatever.) I’ve been toying with some ideas, but none of them seem right. I’m leaning towards ‘The Magical Oh-La-La Flower of Doom doesn’t affect Jihae’ but I’m not a HUGE fan of that one.
But enough about me…. GUYS! 50! I know I did this in another comment but… PARTY PARTY PARTY 🎉 🎉 🎈 🎊 *throws cake and pies* *laughs as the pie ‘accidentally’ nails my brother in the face* *disco lights* CONGRATS!
By the way, Issabelle, I ADORE the cover for Heir to His Crown! I would definitely pick that book up at the library.

    • Issabelle

*dances* Really? I’M SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hoped it was very helpful!!! LOL!! Well, personally I think the angels sound a lot more interesting than the vampires. XD (Haha, me neither. So I’m just gonna take your word for it. 😉 ) If you don’t mind me asking what’s your story’s name? (I’m over here trying to put together all the possible solutions for BRM.) Aaahh, cool!!!! You’ll figure it out!! I have total faith in you!!!!! GOOOO ALLY!!!! *waving pom poms* Ooooh, Magical Oh-La-La Flower of Doom sounds really interesting!!!!! I wonder what that is…🤔 Aww, girl, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!! 😊 I really can’t believe TWN has that many followers. I never would’ve thought anyone on earth would care about our posts. 🙂 Haha, that’s okay! It’s now been “officially” announced so it’s time to CELEBRATE!!!!!! YEA!!! PARTY!! 🍫🍫🎉🎉🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂 Um…I think I’m getting carried away with all the emojis. XD *doges the cake and pie and tries really hard not to laugh as the pie hits Ally’s brother but that’s easier said than done* 🤣🤣 *dances in the disco lights* THANK YOU!!!!!! 🙂
Aww, girl, THANKS A BUNCH!!!! I’m soooo happy you like it!!! A friend of mine had designed it for me and I was like EEeekk this is the most epic cover EVER!!! <33 YAY!! If I ever get Heir to His Crown published, that should TOTALLY be the cover!! I'd pick it up at the library too in a heartbeat!!! Plus, doesn't it make you think of The False Prince's cover?

      • Ally M.J.

Lol, glad you like the Magical Oh-La-La Flower of Doom. It’s actually called a Leot Blossom, but I like Magical Oh-La-La Flower of Doom better.
BRM stands for Blood Red Moonlight. Thought, to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of that name and I might change it later on. Just out of curiosity, what were some of the titles you thought up?
The cover really does have a False Prince vibe! Claps to your friend!

        • Issabelle

LOL!!!! I like magical oh-la-la flower of doom better too. XD It’s fun to say!!! But Leot Blossom is still REALLY AH-MAY-ZHING too!!!!!! I’m telling you, you’re a GENIUS when it comes to names!!! *shaking head in wonder*
Aaah, yes, I think you’ve mentioned it before. 🙂 That’s a really cool name!!!!! It sounds very intriguing!!! Ooooh, I bet this story is just soooo EPIC!!!! One of these days I’m going to want to be beta reading for you, so keep that in mind. XD 😃 (My mind was thinking about names but didn’t come up with anything that worked for all three letters. XD) But here’s a list I just made up on the spot: Basic Real Magic; Behind Reality Madness (okay, that one doesn’t even make sense. XD); Better Read More (a personal fav of mine XD); and Beautiful Risk Maker. Okay, those just sound ridiculous now that I think about it. 🤣 It was kind of fun though. XD
YES!!! Good to know it’s not just me thinking that. XD But it’s another big reason why it was EPIC!!! *clapping wildly for my friend* Do you design covers for your books?

          • Ally M.J.

Ye-es… it’s not the best… but there is this glowing ball of fire and death that I like.
(That didn’t sound unnerving at all)

            • Ally M.J.

What I mean is that I drew this orb of fire and death that I think I might use on my mock-cover. Sorry I was so weird about it lol

              • Issabelle

LOL!!!! It didn’t sound weird, I knew what you meant. Besides I ALWAYS say things in super weird and really confusing ways. XD But that’s really cool that you drew something for a possible mock-cover!!!! I am not skilled enough as a drawer to do that. XD Unless you want stick people on my covers. 😉

    • Katherine

Thank you, Ally!!!!!!!😀 Yes, bring on the party!!!!!!!!🎉 *dances in the disco lights*

Ooh, I love the sound of you WIP!!!!!!! Angels sound soooo AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grace King-Matchett

Hey!!! First of all, CONGRATS on trying to get an agent. I respect you for that. Still am not even halfway through my first draft of book one. I hope your hope levels rise, you’re wayyy too good of a writer for them not to!!!! 😅🤣 Second of all, THANK YOU for writing this blog post! There are multiple plot twists throughout my whole series, and so I wanted to learn more about making those properly written. 👍

Also, I wanted to point out that it IS possible to have too many plot twists. I read this series called Story Thieves by James Riley, and the first two books were fine, normal amount of twisting to keep the reader intrigued, etc. But as I neared the end of the series, in the fourth, fifth, sixth books, they were extremely fast-paced with twists around EVERY corner (I see you there, twist, hiding behind that door!!) and it was very hard for me to keep up with what was going on. The Story Thieves books have a GREAT plot, I really like them for that, but the end of the series is pretty hard to keep up with. Anyone else here read them?

    • Issabelle

Aww, girl, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!! It’s been a little hard but I always still like that excitement of sending my story out there!!! Aww, girl, you’re too sweet!!!! THANK YOU!! *blushes* Yeah, finishing a first draft is one of the hardest things for me to do. BUT YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! I absolutely 100% believe in you, Grace!!!!!!! Keep on pressing through!!!! *showers you with chocolate* Aww, girl, THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!!! It means a lot that you think so!! 😊 I don’t know what to say to all of this except a HUNDRED THANK YOUS!!!!!!! <33 You're soo welcome!! I'm soo happy to hear this post was helpful!!!! YAY!!!! I know you can totally write some epic plot twists!!! (Also, I've not forgotten about beta reading for you. I've gotten really busy with school I haven't gotten to ask my mom yet but I will get to it ASAP!!)

Oh, yes, TOTALLY agree!!!!! Too much of anything in stories is not normally good. Plus if it happens continuously, readers are gonna start figuring it out and that ruins the whole plot twist. Yeah, I can see what you mean. I've read the Story Thieves series by James Riley, but it's been a couple of years so I've forgotten a few things. But I do remember there being a lot of plot twists. YESSS they do have a great plot, though!!!!!!! <33 Have you read Revenge of Magic by James Riley?

      • Grace King-Matchett

Aww, girl, I WANT TO SEE YOU PUBLISHED!!! Haha, thank you! I’m working really hard on it. I’m concerned people won’t like my ideas though 😖

*returns the hundred thank yous with a hundred you’re welcomes* I’ll definitely reference this post when writing the plot twists!!!

And by the way THANK YOU again for wanting to beta read for me <333 I hope you like my writing if you end up reading it!!!

No, I haven't read Revenge of Magic! I will check it out though!! 😀

        • Issabelle

Aww, girl, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I really wanna see myself published too. 🙂 Oooh, awesome!!!!! Aww, girl, all that matters is if YOU like your story! I know I’ll LOVE it and if there’s anyone out there who doesn’t well they just didn’t have good taste in books to begin with!! I wouldn’t worry about it!!! Write the story on your hear and the rest will work out!!!!!!!!! 🙂 I believe in you!!!!!

🙂 YAY!!!! I’m soooo happy to hear!!!! *jumps up and down*

Of course, girl!!!!! I’m really sorry I haven’t gotten back yet on it, but I really can’t wait to read it!!!!! I already know I’m gonna enjoy it!!!!!! 🙂

Oooh, you should!!! It was really good. I mean, not my fav by him but it wasn’t totally bad either. 🙂

          • Grace King-Matchett

Aww, thank you!!! I’ll try and just write for myself for now, and then once I’m done, I’ll get it published (hopefully XD). I think I have somewhere near 12, 500 words so far?? 25 pages?? XD I can’t really remember.

It’s okay! I am a procrastinator for too many reasons XD. Ahhh I hope you like my story when you read it!! Once you’ve read it, I want you to tell me your fave characters, parts of the story, etc. Hahaha, I always tell people to read it as if they were reading it like a normal book they’d find.

Yes, I’ll check it out! Is it related to Story Thieves at all, or no? Just curious~

            • Issabelle

You’re welcome!!!! Alrighty!! That sounds like a SUPER GREAT plan!!!! <33 Oooooh, really? THAT IS EPIC!!!!!!! WHOOOOOO!!!!! WAY TO GO, GIRL!!!! *dances and passes around cake and chocolate* 🍫🍫🎂🎂 You're doing GREAT!!!!! <33333

LOL!!!! I totally feel ya, sister. 😉 Aaaahhh, I soooo know I'm going to!!!! Okey-dokey I will ABSOLUTELY do that!! *getting excited wondering who's gonna be my fav character* 😉 LOL!! That's great, 'cause that's normally how I do it!

YAY!!! <333 No, it's not. It's actually a lot different than how his stories normally go. But I still enjoyed it!

  • Ashlyn

YAY!!! what an AWESOME post! This was REALLY helpful. I’ve always wondered how authors come up and do plot twists SO WELL! (Well, not all of them do it well, but most)

I read them form the library but have now already ordered them so I can have my own copies! I am in love with those books! Now I just have to get ahold of the Captive Kingdom.
Ok I’ll stop going on about how amazing they are, (a very hard thing to do lol)

Anyway, this post was GREAT. Thanks!

Aww, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH, ASHLYN!!!!!!!!! YAY!!! It makes me VERY happy to hear when a writing tip post of mine was super helpful!!!!! *dances* Yeah, there are some authors who are just AH-MAY-ZHING at those plot twists and it’s always like HOW??!! • Allie Jo Andersen

CONGRATS on getting fifty subscribers!!!! That’s amazing!!!! 😀 So exciting!!!!!

I LOVE working with plot twists… they make things interesting!! Almost every project I’m working on (yes, including Sci-Fi Fridays and Superhero Retirement) has a plot twist! I also love incorporating plot twists in shorter projects, especially short stories and flash fiction. 🙂 I love it when I’m reading a short story then the author drops a plot twist bomb then ends the story. XD It usually makes me smile, raise my eyebrows and/or want more. 😉

Oooh, The False Prince definitely had the best plot twist that I’ve ever read so far. I usually see the plot twist coming, but I totally didn’t in this case and it just blew me away.

    • Issabelle

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, ALLIEEEEE!!!!!!! I honestly still can’t believe it! Are you sure I’m not dreaming? XD IKR!! 😃😃😃

YES SAME HERE!!!!!! Plot twists are probably the one and only thing I’m halfway decent at. Just about everything I write has it in there. AGREED!!!!! WHOOOO!!!! YAY FOR PLOT TWISTS!!!!! (Ooh, yeah, I remember there being like some plot twists in Sci-Fi Fridays old volume…I’m very eager to see what we’ve got going on in the new on. *moving to the edge of my seat*) *gasp* Plot twist in short stories? THAT’S GENIUS!!!!!!! WHY HAVEN’T I DONE THAT BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, now I’m getting a new short story idea slowly turning around in my mind. XD YES SAME!!!! It makes the story very interesting and draws the readers in more!!!!!!! Oooh, YEA!!!! 😉

I SECOND THAT!!!! The False Prince really does have the most epic plot twist EVER!!!!! I’m the same way!! I normally can figure it out in stories, but like I said, I was totally wrong!!!!!!! 😉

  • Addie H

This was a great post! I’m so sorry it’s been so long since I’ve around on here. 🙁 I’ve been sooooo busy! xD Anyways, I enjoyed reading this, even though I’m not a writer, there were still some great tips in there. And I TOTALLY agree with you about “The False Prince”!! I second-guessed what I thought would happen like 40 times. xD

Great post, girl! I love how there’s always a mention of “The False Prince” in your posts! 🤣

    False Prince fangirls forever!!!

    -Addie xx-

    • Issabelle

YAY!! I’m sooo happy to hear!!!!! *gets excited* Aww, girl, that’s TOTALLY okay!!! Life happens and I 100% understand!!!! 🙂 No worries whatsoever!!!!! I’m just happy to hear that you enjoyed this post it always means a lot!!!! *hugs* WHOOOOO!!!!!! I’m really excited to hear this!!!!!!! And hey, if you’re around me long enough you never know if you do end up getting the writerly vibes. • Jane

These tips are really gonna help!!!!!!!! I’m sorry your hope level is so low (I still think you have a great chance of being published though) *makes sure Issabelle isn’t looking* *becomes writing agent and accepts her book because it’s AWESOME* *book becomes New York Times Best Seller* *goes back to being Jane and throws her a big party to celebrate with extra chocolate*
I am definitely going to put a plot twist into my story!!!!! They are soooooo much fun to write!!!!
I think the best plot twist I’ve ever read, was in Spy School Revolution. The whole book is packed with surprising plot twists and has you spinning in circles trying to figure out what’s going to happen. The False Prince was also packed with plot twists. Especially at the end where ***** tries to **** ****** and ** ***** **** but then ****** **** ** ******* and ********** **** *** ****. I mean, that part just had me blown away. XD
Anyway, great post!!! And congratulations on 55 subscribers!!!!!!! (I feel like I’m talking to a YouTuber XD) Here, wait, let me think about this. Congrats on your 55 Blogiteers? (like pioneers but with the word blog) That took me FOREVER to come up with and not even that good. XD

    • Issabelle

YAY!!! I’m soooo happy to hear!!!! *jumps up and down* Aww, girl, it’s okay. (THANK YOU!!!!! *still crossing fingers*) LOL!!! Girl, this has just brightened up my whole day!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!! Man, wouldn’t it be great if you were a literary agent? XD That’d help a lot!!!!! *can’t believe Into the Lamp became a New York Times Best Seller* XD Oooh, AWESOME PARTY!!!!!!!!! *takes all the chocolate*
WHOOOOO!!!!!! Plot twists are sooooooo much fun!!!!! YESS!!!!!! Oooh, really, that’s SUPER COOL!!!! (And another good reason why I need to get back into that series. Spy School Revolution sounds soooo awesome!!!) WHOA!!! One of these days, I’m planning on writing a book like that. XD I’ve been wanting to get back to working on my spy stories. It’s been FOREVER since I’ve written one now that I’m more into fantasy, but I still miss all the EPIC things you can do with the genre. 🙂 YESS THE FALSE PRINCE WAS SOOOOOOOO GOOD with its plot twists!! IKR!! I also enjoyed when ***** tried to stop ******** and then ********** happened but then ********* and it ended where **** ******** ****** ****** That was AWESOME!!!!!! But yes, your part blew me away too. XD
THANK YOU!!!!!!! <33 Aww, girl, THANK YOU AGAIN SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! (LOL!!! Sometimes I feel like a youtuber. XD) YESSS IT'S SOOO AWESOME TO HAVE 55 BLOGITEERS!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!! Hey, it's a lot more genius than what I came up with. XD All I got was blogowers. (Like blog followers.) You could have blogscribers. XD

  • Ashlyn

I forgot to mention…..CONGRATS on 50!!!!!!!!!!! That’s SOOOO cool!! And YES, Jennifer Neilson is SO GOOD AT plot twists, it amazes me. So for The False Prince, I DID NOT anticipate THAT twist. (I think you know what I mean by THAT) like, I knew a twist was coming, i could feel it, and it’s what kept me hooked, but wow, I never saw that coming!!! Like, it was mind blowing to me! it actually took me some time to get my head around it, because it was so brilliant! And then, when I reread the book I was like ‘totally shoulda figured this out’ lol 😂 the whole chapter explaining it kept me on the edge of my seat!
Again, SO excited for chapter 5!!!

    • Issabelle

Aww, that’s okay!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! <33 YES JENNIFER NIELSEN IS THE QUEEN AT PLOT TWISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *pumps fist in the air* Me neither!!!! (Yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean by THAT. XD) Isn't it sooooo awesome when that happens in stories? *contented sigh* I was mind-blown by it! Aaaahh that's soooo COOL!!!!!! YES I WAS THE SAME WAY!!!!!!! Every time I reread TFP I'm like HOW did I not see it before. It's like waaaaaaaaaaaaay too clear. XD YES I WAS ALSO THE EXACT SAME WAY!!!!! Those two chapters that explained it was soooo EPIC!!!!!
      YAY!!!! I'm sooo happy!!! <33

  • Mahitha R.

Hi Issabelle!! All of those writing tips are SUPER helpful!!! Thanks so much for them!! Here are the answers to your questions~

    1. I’m planning on having an “epic plot-twist” in my story, but that might take some thinking…🤔

    2. Nope!

    3. Hmmm…best plot twist? Well, I haven’t read many books with a lot of great plot twists (sadly), but if we’re talking about the BEST plot twist, then I’ll have to go with Valley of the Wolves by Laura Gallego García. I know I just keep recommending this book so much, but I’m not kidding about how good it is!!

Well…I guess that’s it!!! Can’t wait to read Heir to His Crown (when you’re done writing it of course AND if you’re willing to share it)!

    • Issabelle

Hi, Mahitha!!! YAY!! I’m soooo happy to hear!!! This has got to be one of my favorite writing tip posts!!!!!! Aww, girl, you’re TOTALLY welcome!! THANK YOU for reading and commenting!!!!! <33 Oooh, YEA!! *settles down and grabs bucket of pop corn*

YESS!!!!! YAY FOR THE EPIC PLOT TWISTS!!!!!!! I know it's gonna be great!!!

      Alrighty!!! Sounds good!

Aaah, girl, really?? *is shocked* We're gonna have to change that. 🤣 Now I MUST publish my book so you can read more epic stories with plot twists. XD Aaah, yes, I think I've heard you talk about that book before. I'm soooo gonna check this one out!!! I'm always down for books with awesome plot twists!!!!! <33 ooooh, I bet it's SUPER AWESOME!!!!!!

Alrighty!!!!! LOVED reading your comment and hearing from you!!! *hugs* YAY!!!!! I hope it'll turn out really good. I'm a little bit proud of how it's starting to turn out!!!! 🙂 (I think for Heir to His Crown I'm gonna have it where people can sign up to be on my beta reading team. =)

  • Trixie

Awesome tips!! Thanks a lot!! In my WIP, which I am thinking of calling Recipe for Disaster, there isn’t plot twist more like you find out to answer to all these questions you have and your jaw drops and you go OOOHHHH!!!! The best plot twist I have ever read was in a series called Keeper of the Lost Cities( I can’t remember which book) which I highly recommend. Anyways, thanks!!

    • Issabelle

THANK YOU, TRIXIE!!!!!!!!!! You’re very welcome!!!!! Ooooh, Recipe for Disaster sounds sooooo AH-MAY-ZHING!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE the title!!! <33 Oooh, well, that still sounds SUPER COOL!!!!! Plus not all books work well with super mind-blowing plot twists. It just kind of depends on what you're writing. BUT jaw-dropping and OOOHHH-going are still just as AWESOME!!!!!! Aaah, that's really cool!!!!! Yep, I've heard lots of great things about Keeper of the Lost Cities and it's on my TBR. I hope I can get to it soon. It sounds soooo good!!!!! You're welcome!!!! THANK YOU for reading and commenting! <33

      • Trixie

You are so welcome!! Thank you!! Aww!! I agree!!
AWESOME!! I have been trying to get my hands on the false prince, but the library doesn’t have it :/ You are so welcome!!

        • Issabelle

Aww, girl, you’re TOTALLY welcome!!!!! YAY!!
Aaaahhh, that’s sooooo sad. :,( Man, I hope your library will get it soon!!!!!! I guess everybody wants to read that book now. XD Well, hopefully the wait will all be worth it once you can finally read the false prince!!!!!!!!!!!! <33

  • Alexa

Oooh! I love this post! I love your writing tips posts! They are always so helpful! (I love the Kermit gif XD) Oh and your progress bar is EPIC! Congrats on being 55% done! That’s halfway! You go, girl!

Am I going to have an epic plot twist? I’ve always wanted one in my stories, but I don’t know yet what I would do. But this post definitely makes me want to have a plot twist! I’ll have to put so more thought into it!

I don’t have any other questions. I think you covered all the major details!

Best plot twist ever you say? Well, The False Prince does have a really EPIC one. I don’t think any plot twist can beat that one XD.

    • Issabelle

YAY!!! I’m soooo happy to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aww, THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really? That means a LOT to me!!! I love knowing that I can help other writers out!!!!!! (LOL!!! I was very happy with it!!! <33 *bows dramatically* THANK YOU!!!! It's been tough but I try just to pound out words in my first drafts. No one said books had to be filled with sentences that made sense, right? 😉 THANK YOU!!! I hope things are going awesome with your writing as well!!!!! 🙂

That's okay!!! Not all books work well with plot twists. It kind of depends on the story and what's happening. Ooooh, you should throw in some plot twists!!!! They're soooo much fun to write!!!! YES!!! TOTALLY!!!!!!!!!!

Alrighty!! Sounds good!!! *thumbs up* YAY!!

YES!!!! I SECOND THAT FOR THE FALSE PRINCE!!!!!!!! YES!!! I know of no other book that can beat The False Prince in its plot twisting either!!!!!! XXD EPIC!!! *high fives*

  • Joy Caroline

Issa, don’t lose hope! I know it’s hard, but keep believing you wrote Into the Lamp for a reason. And that God and all of us are behind you all the way. I’m sending a lotta love your way. *virtual hugs*

Thank you for the shoutout. That’s a lot of syllables for amazing! *grins and feels special* Ay, I feel bad that I’m so late when you did the post I requested! I don’t want you to think I was ignoring you for hours or anything. I love your blog! But today I went back to attending on-campus school, and it was such a happy day. I loved seeing all my teachers and my principal in person again, though it was tough we couldn’t hug. My school’s very huggy, lol. But we get to send emotional hugs to each other! So I’m super happy about that. Just wanted to let you know that if I’m really late, it’s ’cause I am back on campus! Not ’cause I’m ignoring your notifications, because I seriously get so happy when I see one!

It’s so great how you displayed Grace’s cover for Heir to His Crown on your sidebar. It looks very beautiful, good placement choice!

Anyways, thank you for doing a requested post of mine, and again I’m sending much love to you and Colin and Genie!! (And Zoey and Eli and everyone else… maybe not so much to Kyle. 😂)

    • Issabelle

Aww, JC, I shall try my hardest not to!!!! 🙂 Aww, I will!!!!! I just hope that reason was maybe it’s supposed to be published. *crossing fingers* Aww, THANK YOU!!!!!! Yep, God’s TOTALLY got my back in all of this. I would’ve given out AGES ago if hasn’t been helping me. 🙂 THANK YOU, GIRL!!!! This comment is making me super happy. 😊

You’re welcome!!!!! Hahaha, well you are VERY amazing and super special!!!!!!!! I just needed to make sure we all got the point. 😉 Girl, not a single worry!!! Life happens!!! I’m not one bit upset, I promise! <33 Girl, I did not think that!!!! Plus, trust me, people can't ignore me forever. Eventually, I can get ANYONE to talk to me. 😉 Aww, I'm soooo happy to hear!!! I LOVE yours too!!! <33 Oooh, really, that's super cool!!!!!! Aww, yeah, I feel ya there!!!! Good news, almost all my friends are virtual so I can send many hugs. XD Hey, like I said not a problem!!!! I've started some super stressful classes and will probably be disappearing from the blogosphere a couple of times for that reason!!!! But I'm also TOTALLY not trying to ignore anyone!!!!!! <33 Really? I'm sooo happy to hear!!!! *hugs*

THANK YOU!!!!!! When she asked if anyone wanted a cover, I was like YES!!! Because I had the absolute perfect spot to stick it and didn't have any other covers for the book that I liked. XD YAY!!!! *dances* Thank you, thank you! *bows*

Of course, girl, anytime!!!! Whenever you've got writerly questions send 'em my way!!! Really, 'cause I never know what topics to write about. XD Wait a minute, I literally just now remembered that you had asked me months ago to do a post on writing second drafts!! Do you even remember that? 🤣 Man, I can't believe I all of a sudden remembered that. XD I should probably still do a post on it sometime....🤔 Aww, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH, JC!!!!!!!! <33 Genie also sends her thank yous because apparently she's gonna be very upset if I don't publish this story. XD And...well...I told Colin what you said but he didn't respond so he probably ignored me. He's known to do that. XD (LOL!!! Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be sending any love to Kyle. He's really annoying. XD)

      • Joy Caroline

Of course. After all, what are friends for but to encourage? 😀
Grace’s covers are amazing! Who wouldn’t take her up on that offer? XD
Yup, stressful classes. Which reminds me I have an ap world assignment I REALLY need to finish *sheepish grin* But I’d much rather comment on your site!
Lol, I do remember that, actually. I’m sure it would be awesome if you did write it! But all your posts are cool, so I’m down for anything.
Have a great rest of your day!

        • Issabelle

Yes!!!!!! Man, I’ve just been soooo blessed with the most AMAZING friends EVER!!!!! 😀
Yea, they’re pretty epic!!!! <33 LOL!! Well, technically when I first took her up on her offer I hadn't seen any of her cover designs yet soooo lucky for all of us she's really good. 😆
Oh, girl, you should probably get working on that. XD I have a few papers I have to write for English. 😭 We shall see if I survive. XD LOL!!! I'd much rather be commenting on blogs too, so I TOTALLY get that!!!! 😉
Hahaha, I bet we were all wondering what happened to that idea. XD It got lost in my brain. 😉 BUT AT LEAST I FOUND IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Oooh, I should still write it!!!!! (Which reminds me I have a writing suggestion that was given for me to do a post back in like October that I still haven't done yet. 😂) Aww, THANK YOU, GIRL!!!!! You're TOO SWEET!!! *blushes*
          Yep!!!! You too!! <33

  • shermaine

woowww, I loooove all of these. You made some really good points. there are some books where the plot twist just does not make sense at all and it literally just leaves me like…wot just hapPeneD?? I also hate and love how authors always make me second guess myself as I read the book. I would be so sure that this and this is going to happen, and then something else happens that does not align with my theory at all. It’s so mean 😭(no i’m joking I love a good plot twist). I really loved your post, like sincerely.

    • Issabelle

Awww, THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH, SHERMAINE!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!! I’m sooooo happy to hear that! Plot twists have always been one of my FAVORITE things in writing and was really hoping this post would be good!! 😄 Aaahh, yea, I can TOTALLY relate!! I think some people don’t realize that plot twists are not the most easiest thing to write. LOL SAME!!! XD Oooh, yep, I feel ya on that one, girl!! If they make me second guess myself too many times it can get frustrating. LOL!!! I can absolutely 100% relate!!!! <33 Awww, THANK YOU A HUNDRED TIMES OVER!!!!!!!!!!! This has made me sooo happy!!!! *dances* THANK YOU for reading and commenting!!!!! *throws our party streamers* (I just like doing that. XD)

    • Issabelle

Awww, THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! I’m soooo happy to hear!!! <33 (Ooooh, really? That's EPIC!!! *gets excited* Good luck with those edits! I hope everything goes really well!!!!!!!!)

  • Issabelle

GUYS!!!!!!! I can’t believe I FORGOT to add “Keep Writing” at the end of this post and nobody said ANYTHING!!!!!!!! Well, anyways, for old times sake here I go: KEEP WRITING Y’ALL!!!!!

    IS OUT! 😎

  • Jen

Great tips, Issabelle! Foreshadowing is definitely important to a plot twist, along with a proper response to it, lol. I love putting plot twists in my stories. ^_^

    • Issabelle

THANK YOU, JEN!!!!!!!!! Ah, yes, foreshadowing can sometimes make or break a plot twist!!!! YES!!! The right response is VERY important!!!! 😄 YESSS SAME!!!! Plot twists are just soooo much fun to write!! I’m currently doing a little bit of planning for a new story idea and I think I’m gonna throw in like three to five different plot twists. (*sigh* I get carried away sometimes. XD)

  • Ribbon Ash

I love these tips!!!! I will definitely come back to this when I’m editing or revising my own plot twists in my stories.

Awww, I know it is so disheartening, but don’t give up! Even if no one accepts this story now, it doesn’t mean that no one will ever. I’ve heard that some stories get to be published later. Maybe it isn’t meant to be your debut novel, but rather the one further along the track. So I say never give up on this story if you really feel that it meant to be publish. Maybe you just need to hold on it for a while. I hope this is encouraging. I even just read a story when this happened with a published author so I know it is a thing. *sends a virtual hug and a plate of cookies* (Should I be sending that many? Oh well)

Also you are doing so well with your new WIP!!!!!!!! So proud of you for how far you have gone with it!!!!!!

    • Issabelle

YAAAAY!!!!! I’m sooooooooo happy!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! <33

Aww, THANKS, girl!!!!! 🙂 Yea, you're totally right. That's actually very true. I hadn't really thought about that before!! Aww, THANK YOU, GIRL!!!!!!!! It's really tempting to give up on Into the Lamp, but I want it to be published soooooo badly. I've never loved a story this much before. So I'll try REALLY hard not to give up completely!!!!!!! Yes, girl, this was VERY ENCOURAGING!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haha, well I guess that means there's always hope, right? *hugs you back* *gobbles down all the cookies* (LOL! Yeah, it probably was too many since I'm known to go really crazy after too much sugar, but that doesn't ever stop me. XD)

Aww, THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! I've been trying really hard just to sit down and write and most of the time my words come out as incoherent sentences, but it's first draft stuff. No one ever said it was supposed to be good. 🙂 Aww, girl, just a HUNDRED MILLION THANK YOUS!!!!!!! <33

    • Issabelle

Heya, Addie!!!!! 😃 Whoa, that’s REALLY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Aww, girl, I’m just VERY honored to be on that list of favorite bloggers. It means sooooo much. 🙂 Okey-dokey!! I checked it out!!!! It looks super cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Though, I’m trying to figure out who the “they” is ’cause it looks like it’s just one dude. 😆) You’re welcome! XD

Aww, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! I ADORE this cover and might’ve stared at it for waaaaaay too many hours. XD Actually, no, a friend of mine made it for me. (Which is probably why it looks soooo much better than my other covers. XD) I’m soooo happy you like it!!!!! <33

    • Issabelle
