Full of humor and romance, Not Your Average Fairy Tale is a quick-read that draws you deep into a new world where nothing is as it should be.
The first in a two book series by YA author, Chantele Sedgwick, Not Your Average Fairy Tale is really not how we expect a fairy tale should go. Ash Summerland has all a guy could want. And in order to graduate from the Academy of Magical Beings, he has plans to apprentice Logan (the sandman). But when he gets his letter from the Council, he doesn’t get the apprenticeship he wants. Instead he has to apprentice Lady Shenelle, the fairy godmother.
Who’s ever heard of a guy fairy godmother? Ash wants to know. But if he ever wants to become a sandman he has to pass. Basically meaning he has to grant three wishes to a human girl named Kendall. Easy enough, until he learns she’s deep in grief over her dad’s recent death and doesn’t want any wishes.
“And worst of all, she doesn’t believe in happy endings.”
I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and had a few surprising twists. The story idea would have to be my favorite part. Sedgwick hooks the reader from the first page into a world beyond our eyes where elves and fairies exist. One of the few problems I had with it was an overuse of the word “crap.” It might not be a problem with you, but I really didn’t like seeing it a lot. Besides that, the book was really cool and I can’t wait to read #2.
